Hippopotamuses are full of surprising contrasts, they’re massive land mammals, yet they spend much of their lives in rivers and lakes. Their bodies are perfectly adapted for both worlds. Eyes, ears, and nostrils sit high on their heads so they can breathe and see while mostly submerged. Their dense bodies help them walk along riverbeds rather than float, and they can hold their breath underwater for up to five minutes.
Despite their calm appearance, hippos are among the most territorial animals in Africa. Males defend stretches of river with force, while females fiercely protect their young. At night, they leave the water to graze, sometimes walking several kilometers in search of fresh grass. This amphibious lifestyle makes them unique in the animal kingdom.
